MY FIFTH AND LAST READING LOG YEHEY!!!

Book Title: Divergent by Veronica Roth

PART 1

When I was in third year high school, my Social Studies teacher told me that in order to have peace, we must first have war. I was surprised then, because up to that point, I had believed that peace could be achieved by a form on its own, a form of peace too. But as I pondered about what he said, it occurred to me that he was right. War is the predecessor of peace. It is a twisted path, but it is. I was reminded of this thought when I was reading the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth. It had occurred to me that the people of the five factions of Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite are in a rather more peaceful harmony compared to in reality. It made me wonder how they had accomplished that. The beginning of the novel showed some tension between Abnegation and Erudite, but it is verbal only and not as severe as other conflict.
Divergent is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior who is from the faction of the Abnegation (the selfless). But Beatrice transferred into Dauntless (the brave) during the Choosing Ceremony, after she had discovered that the aptitude test that determines a person’s faction didn’t work on her. Instead, the aptitude test result showed that Beatrice has aptitude for three factions – Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite (the intelligent) – a condition known as Divergence. Back to Beatrice’s transfer, she transferred because she reasoned out that she was too selfish for Abnegation. I commend Beatrice for doing what she did. It is actually quite selfless to leave your family because you do not deserve to be with them; it is also a great act of bravery.
But I also wonder why the Dauntless is so raucous. They say that they are brave, but isn’t being brave different from being harsh? They are fearless, yes, but isn’t fearless different from stupid? Because it seems to me that jumping out of trains is stupidity.
In the end, I think Tris will face more challenges in her future in the Dauntless. But I think it will not only for her, but for the whole city, and all the factions too.

Part II
FAVORITE PART OF THE NOVEL

My favorite part in the novel is when Tris placed first in the stage two of the initiation stage. She had gone through tough times, especially in stage one where she was beaten up by Molly. So when she was first place in the fear simulation stage, I was very happy for her. She had finally shown her competitors, especially Peter, Molly, and Drew, that she is not a little helpless girl.

However, I think placing first would spell trouble for Tris. Edward, who placed first in the ranking during stage one, was stabbed in the eye by Peter. Tris will be put in a dangerous situation, especially considering the tight competition between the initiates. Her life could be threatened by her fellow competitors.
Also, her friendship with Al, Christina, and Will could be challenged. I think her friends would be suspicious of her, even envious, with how she could cope up and deal with the fear simulation, given that all of them are having nightmares and shook up from their fears while Tris seems unaffected.

Unfortunately for Tris though, I know she could not explain to her friends the reason why she could easily get out of the simulation – because she is Divergent, and her brain could comprehend that what is happening to her isn’t actually happening. In short, she is aware and alert during simulation. If she will tell her friends – or anyone for that matter – that she is Divergent, she will be in more danger.
But I think it would greatly changed the way the Dauntless are treating Tris. I think she will be admired and be given more respect as a transfer from Abnegation.

All in all, I can tell that Tris’ success would not bode well for her in terms of her safety. But I could also say that it will become a test of friendship for the four of them, a challenge to their trust of each other, and a whole new transformation of the Dauntless views of Tris the Stiff.

MY FOURTH READING LOG

Book Title: Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn

PART 1

Wait Till Helen Comes is truly a scary ghost story. Reading it as a young adult, it brings back my childhood inhibition when I fear supernatural beings like ghosts. It also made me terrified about the idea that a spirit can remain, disturb and frighten people’s lives after its human body breathes its last. But the thing that really gave me a chill is the appearance of Helen where Molly, Heather’s stepsister, uttered this line:

Too frightened to breathe, I saw the glimmer of blue light shape itself into the figure of a girl no bigger than Heather.  She wore a white dress, and her hair, as dark as Heather’s, tumbled in waves down her ack.  Her features were indistinct, her eyes in shadow, but I knew who she was.”

Heather’s revulsion and rebellious attitude toward his step family left me annoyed and disappointed. How can she afford to lie to his father who was the one who raised her after her mother passed away? What if she died because of her paranoia? What if molly didn’t save her when she almost drowned herself? Given the scenario that she really died out of drowning, Will she be happy in the arms of her “so-called ghost friend”, Helen? What about her family? Will they be happy without Heather? With regards to Helen, isn’t she the one to be blamed for all of these tragedies?

Undeniably, the locket which Helen gave to Heather will serve as their connection. Even though, Helen already rested in peace. It will really come to point that the two girls will find each other again, maybe in form of dreams, in the mirror, you know, unexpected stuffs like that.

This story taught me the value of a family. A family must enrich each other’s live by being together and share what each and everyone has, thus making them closer and united so as the saying goes “United we stand, divided we fall” describes best what a family should be. Let me refer a part of the story where Heather tells her father she accidentally started the fire that killed her mother. He understands it wasn't her fault. The family is able to be a true family and get along. Acceptance also plays a role, and its applicable when somebody close to your heart admits his or her mistakes, its not really a big deal giving him or her a second chance.

MY THIRD READING LOG

PART 1

Book Title: Paper Towns by John Green                                                    Date: March 5 2014

Question:
I wonder why Margo Roth Spiegelman didn’t go with Quentin Jacobsen? I find it hard for Quentin to move on in that situation considering that he has given up some important things for himself spending sleepless nights and working out stuffs just to track Margo. For me it doesn’t pay Quentin and his friends’ efforts at all. I thought, what if Margo joined them back to Jefferson Place that day? Isn’t it satisfying and happier? Will it bring relief to Margo’s parents? Will she be given the attention she used to have in school? Or Would it be a happy ending for  Margo and Quentin?

Connection:
The way Quentin and his friends, Ben, Radar, and Lacey bond together reminds me of my friends, chilling around and do nothing but disturb the peace, make noises, speak out our minds, do some sleepovers to play card games and movie marathons.

In a way, I can relate to what Q, Ben, Radar, and Lacey did during their graduation day. That is something unusual but really great. When I was in High School I am this easy going type of guy who goes where there’s fun and thrill but, unlike them, I attended the graduation. However, AFTER the graduation, my classmates and I did something that can be called moments worth remembering. We sneaked out from our parents’ sight and didn’t immediately went to our respective homes instead, we proceeded to some of our classmates houses. Five unfortunate houses were ambushed and all areas are cleared leaving the owners defenseless. HAHA. As Quentin Jacobsen once said, THAT WAS HELLUVA NIGHT”

Another connection I had with the story is that when I go to school, there is this girl whom I always look for. Her eyes are sweet. Her smile is so extravagant and her face is angelic. She is gorgeous in her own simple way. And like Quentin gives attention to Margo, it seemed that this girl is very ideal for me and I on the other hand was smiling and was left beset by thoughts of her but SHE HAS A BOYFRIEND -_-

Prediction:
Time will come, Margo Roth Spiegelman And Quentin Jacobsen will cross roads and they got to:
1)Greet each other. 2) Go out on a date 3) Reminisce the old days 4) Realize that they really love each other and they are meant to be 5) Get married 6) Invite Ben, Radar and Lacey to the wedding 7) Do Honeymoon 8) Have babies 9) Feel Amazing 10) Live happily ever after.

Reflection:
Margo, the daughter of her parents, sister of Ruthie, Lacey’s best friend and Quentin’s love interest left with an enigma. Quentin a.k.a “Q”, on the other hand, just did everything to find her and  I commend him for having the courage and perseverance. It was smart of him to decipher the inklings left by Margo. If I was on Q’s I can’t do that heroic stuff. You know, sneaked out from graduation drove the van to Agloe, New York and bring three friends of multiple personalities just to find the girl of my dreams, the missing piece of my puzzle and the girl who captured my heart.
I admire the character of Margo, witty and deep, appealing but tough, hilarious but an explorer type  of  chic and mysterious. But I didn’t think it was right for her to leave everyone hanging. Though she was already found, it was still nerve-wracking and everybody was like crazy searching for her.
I appreciate the role of Q’s parents. They are loving as normal parents would do their children and they are always supportive and understanding though Q left them in his graduation with a big “WHAT?”
In totality, This young-adult novel called Paper Towns is an interesting one because of the twists but if there is a lesson that I learned from this story it would be. Every moment of your life is lived for the future-you go to high school so you can go to college so you can get a good job so you can get a nice house so you can afford to send your kids to college so they can get a good job so they can get a nice house so they can afford to send their kids to college. This is a quote from Margo.

PART 2

CHARACTER PROFILES: DRAW PICTURE OF HOW YOU IMAGINE A CHARACTER WOULD LOOK LIKE  IF HE OR SHE IS STANDING BEFORE YOU. UNDERNEATH HER PICTURE DESCRIBE HER ROLE. DESCRIBE HER GOOD QUALITIES AS WELL AS ANY SHORT COMINGS

Margo is a self described Paper Girl who ran away from home. She plans out adventures in her little black notebook and thinks that planning out adventures is more fun than actually doing them. Basically she is a hot chic who turns out to have the craziest experiences when she got lost., she was one of the most popular kids at her school and she has this charisma that would make you like her even if you really don't know her. She has blue eyes and dark brown hair.
She is different than any other girls. She is witty and deep, appealing but tough, hilarious but an explorer type  of  chic and mysterious.

“Nothing ever happens like you imagine it will”Margo Roth Spiegelman
